Olympic Wrestler Who Used Medal Ceremony as Protest Banned for Two Years
The Olympic bronze medalist, Ara Abrahamian, from Sweden, has been banned from the sport for two years following "scandalous behaviour" at this year's Olympic games in Beijing. Abrahamian caused upset after he showed poor sportsmanship at the games.

He stormed off the Olympic podium after receiving his medal, and stalked to the wrestling mat where he laid down the medal in protest of the refereeing that took place during his matches. His coach has also been banned.

The world wrestling sporting body, known as FILA, said Abrahamian and his coach showed a "serious lack of Olympic spirit." He has already been stripped of the medal by the IOC.

 DMITRI KORKIN INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
At Yakutsk, Russia, Oct. 11-12

U.S. placements

60 kg/132 lbs. – Shawn Bunch, Colorado Springs, Colo. (Gator WC), 3rd

74 kg/163 lbs. – Travis Paulson, Lincoln, Neb. (Sunkist Kids), 2nd

96 kg/211.5 lbs. – Sean Stender, Cedar Falls, Iowa (Sunkist Kids), 3

Colleges have started certifications and once they are complete they can start practice. Each state sets up their own process but for the most part they are fairly similar. College uses 5% BF and HS 7%. I know some of the local colleges have been strength training and conditioning. So wrestling should be right around the corner.

Former Iowa wrestling assistant coach returns

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Former Iowa assistant wrestling coach Terry Brands has returned to the school.
The university announced Wednesday that Brands will serve as assistant coach under his twin brother, Tom.
Terry Brands won two
NCAA championships at Iowa and gold medals in the 1993 and 1995 World Championships. He also won a bronze medal in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Australia.
Brands rejoins the school after three years at USA Wrestling in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The University of Pennsylvania’s head wrestling coach Zeke Jones has announced his resignation to accept a position as the head coach of the United States freestyle national team.

With Jones’ resignation, Penn has also announced that assistant coach Rob Eiter has been appointed interim head coach of the program.

It turns out that the Greco-Roman wrestler who was stripped of his bronze medal for dropping it in disgust on the mat had reason for being angry, according to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Ara Abrahamian of Sweden complained to CAS that a penalty in the second round of his 84-kilogram bout on Aug. 14 against Italian Andrea Minguzzi wasn’t assessed until after the round ended. Once factored in, Abrahamian automatically lost the match. Minguzzi went on to win the gold medal.

Abrahamian’s coach was then denied a request for a video review, then the wrestling federation — the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles, or FILA — refused to consider a protest.

The 28-year-old Abrahamian had to be restrained from going after matside officials following his loss to Minguzzi. He stormed away from the area where interviews are conducted and slammed a door to the dressing rooms.

After he was given his bronze during the medals ceremony, Abrahamian walked off the podium, went over to mat and dropped it in disgust and walked away. On Aug. 15, the International Olympic Committee disqualified Abrahamian and stripped his medal for violating the spirit of fair play during the medal ceremony.
The Armenian-born Abrahamian — who also lost a 2004 Olympic semifinal match on a disputed call — initially wanted judges in the bout tossed out and his medal restored. But in the end, he only wanted CAS to verify that the lack of an immediate appeals process is a loophole that needs to be fixed. It also was referred to as a violation of “the Olympic Charter and FILA’s own rules about fair play.”

Judges said Abrahamian was right.

“We limit ourselves to ruling that FILA must, consistently with the (Olympic) Charter and general principles of fairness, establish for the future a jury of appeal to determine the validity or otherwise of complaints of the kind ventilated by (Abrahamian),” the judges wrote.

Elsewhere in the 20-page ruling, judges noted several times that FILA did not appear at a hearing.

Gary Abbott USA Wrestling
09/04/2008

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) has released its 2007-08 High School Athletics Participation Survey, and the sport of wrestling has grown in all five categories identified.

The statistics for boys wrestling grew during the 2007-08 season concerning the number of athletes participating.

In 2007-08, there were 259,688 boys competing in wrestling, an increase of 2,422 wrestlers from the previous year (a 0.9 percent increase).

In 2007-08, there were 10,090 boys wrestling teams, an increase of 645 from the previous year (a 6.8 percent increase).

Wrestling remained the No. 6 most popular boys sport in terms of number of participants and the No. 8 most popular sport in terms of number of teams.

Girls wrestling increased in both major categories.

The number of girl wrestlers in high schools grew to 5,527 athletes, an increase of 479 wrestlers from the previous year (a 9.5 percent increase)

The number of teams with girl wrestlers in 2007-08 was 1,287 teams, an increase of 60 teams (a 4.9 percent increase).

When combining the number of boys and girls involved in wrestling in 2007-08, the total number grew to 265,215, which increased 2,921 athletes for the year. This amounts to a 1.1 percent increase in total wrestlers for the year.

The number of girl high school wrestlers has gained every year since 1990, a streak of 19 straight years of growth in participation.

For the 18th consecutive year, the number of student participants in high school athletics increased overall.

There was a total of 7,429,381 in 2007-08 in all sports, an increase of 86,471 for the year.
